Let’s talk about what to eat to lower cortisol levels in your mombody for happy hormones.
But first, why is cortisol bad for your appetite? 1) Cortisol triggers a fat-storing enzyme causing many of us to put on more belly fat. It’s no surprise that under times of stress, your waistline will suffer, 2) When cortisol levels rise, it raises your blood sugar levels and keeps them high. This creates insulin resistance - we cover how to help insulin next, 3) Cortisol also causes us to have more food cravings. It’s no surprise that when stressed you are more likely to grab cupcakes and pizza than any other time. During menopause, your body can’t dial-back all of this cortisol and the excess is what contributes to hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, mood swings, anxiety and insomnia.
So how do we help cortisol levels in your diet? The trick is to eat alkaline. That’s a fancy way of saying, eat more veggies. The greener, the better. Alkalinity helps to lower cortisol and burn fat.
Foods are either acidic or alkaline (basic) and the trick is to choose foods that are lowering the acid levels in your body. Eating too many acidic foods can upset hormone balance, wreck your immune system, inhibit digestion, and contribute to premature aging. Adding greens to every meal is a great way to eat alkaline - even breakfast is an opportunity to get those green, leafy vegetables on your plate. But don’t stop there, more alkaline foods include fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
The best alkaline foods to eat: Broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, alfalfa sprouts, asparagus, avocado, bell peppers, carrots, celery, cucumber, eggplant, greens (lettuce, kale, spinach, kale, chard), jalapeno, kimchi, mushrooms, onions, scallions, seaweed, snow peas, tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, cantaloupe, melons, watermelon, chia seeds, hemp hearts, avocado oil, coconut oil.
Staying alkaline is crucial to staying lean, sane, and healthy.
